Bakırköy Prof Dr. Mazhar Osman Mental Health and Neurological Diseases Education and Research Hospital with its official name is directly affiliated to Republic of Turkey Ministry of Health and has the title of Turkey's first modern mental and neurological diseases institution.
If we look at the history of Bakırköy Mental and Neurological Diseases Hospital; Toptaşı Bimarhanesi, in other words mental hospital, located in Üsküdar district was moved to Reşadiye barracks in Bakırköy in 1924 with the initiatives of Mazhar Osman.
Upon the transformation of Reşadiye barracks in Bakırköy into a hospital building, the transfer procedures of Toptaşı Bimarhanesi were completed and the hospital started to serve under the name of Bakırköy Mental and Neurological Diseases Hospital on 15 June 1927. Bakırköy Mental and Neurological Diseases Hospital was serving with its clinics in psychology and neurology when it was first opened, and it initiated various campaigns to increase social awareness with slogans such as "mental hospital not madhouse" and “mentally ill, not insane".
Psychiatric rehabilitation practices were initiated under the leadership of chief physician Faruk Bayülkem in the 1960s in Bakırköy Mental and Neurological Diseases Hospital, and it fell behind worldwide treatment techniques due to the number of patients exceeding its capacity.
With the construction of additional buildings and the increase in the number of personnel in 1979 when Yıldırım Aktuna was the chief physician, alcohol and drug addiction clinic (AMATEM) was opened and Bakırköy Mental and Neurological Diseases Hospital Research and Advanced Training Center (BARİLEM) was opened in 1992. The clock tower built in the hospital complex dates from 1914.
