Those who want to visit the historical sites in Gaziantep encounter a large number of inns. The Customs Inn, which had an important place among these inns, is today converted into a very important museum. The Historical Inn in Karagöz district was built by Haji Ömer Effendi. The Customs Inn, built in 1878, is popularly known as the’ passenger Inn'. On the ground floor there are rooms used as storage rooms and stables. In the upper section, there are regular rooms for passengers. As it was located on the Silk Road at the time, the Customs Inn managed to meet the needs of the passengers for many years to come.
It is possible to capture very clear traces of Ottoman architecture at the inn. The inn, which is evaluated in the category of single-courtyard and two-storey inns, has recently undergone restoration. Customs Inn, which is one of the preferred places for business or tourist trips, is converted into a museum with its restoration completed in the last month of 2011. With this important transformation, the inn begins to serve as both a manufacturing and a sales center.
It is also a place within the customs inn that is unique to the city and keeps its arts alive. Many crafts are kept alive through various workshops in the khan, from tasbih making to glass blowing, from weaving to yemenicism. The inn, which continues as a ‘living museum’, can be visited between 09:00 and 18:00. The museum is open all days except Monday. The museum, which lives in the Customs Inn, is navigable free of charge. The venue is located exactly within the Uzun Bazaar, which is located in Şekeroğlu District. You can easily reach the museum by municipal buses and minibuses.
