Sen Jorj Hospital, one of the oldest medical institutions in Istanbul, was built in 1872 in Beyoğlu Galata, just opposite the Austrian high school. The hospital building, designed by architect Emilio Faracci, has healed countless people since its opening and witnessed the city's history.
In 1872 , there was a cholera epidemic in Istanbul. Other nuns participated in the health mobilization initiated near Galata Tower by two nuns who voluntarily came from Austria for treatment during the epidemic. In 1893, the institution, which incorporated the first children's clinic, converted to hospital status with the adaptation of eye clinic and outpatient services.
This institution which was funded by an international committee, including the Ottoman Sultan, until 1914, continued to grow with other units that have been put into service. With the addition of its annex building in 1927, the institution, which also included different branches, continued to serve with the decision taken from the capital despite the interruption of diplomatic relations with Germany during World War II. .
The institution, which still serves in all basic branches with its operating room and units completely renovated after repair works in 1968 and 2000, is far from the usual hospital mood with its nurses from the German school, with its friendly atmosphere and historical texture. The hospital, which also hosts artistic events such as concerts, paintings, stands out for its artistic and cultural function as well as health.
