The History and Construction of Titus Tunnel

Titus Tunnel, located in the Çevlik region of Hatay’s Samandağ district, was built by Roman Emperor Vespasianus and his son Titus between 69 B.C. and 81 A.D. The primary purpose of this massive structure was to prevent the floodwaters descending from the mountains from damaging the port of Antioch, which frequently experienced floods.

The construction of the tunnel began during the reign of Vespasianus and was completed under the rule of his son Titus. Thousands of slaves and prisoners worked on this tunnel, which stands as a significant example of Roman engineering.

Physical Features and Architectural Structure

Titus Tunnel is 1380 meters long, 7 meters high, and 6 meters wide. The tunnel was designed to channel mountain water away from the port, protecting it from flood damage. At the entrance of the tunnel lies Beşikli Cave, known for its rock tombs. Inside Beşikli Cave, there are 12 rock tombs dating back to the Roman period.
