Horhor Mosque
30.06.2024 15:12
The architecture of horhor mosque, which is not known by whom and exactly when it was built, has widespread opinion that it was built during 18th century because breezes of this period were seen.
Horhor Mosque, which is all stone-built, reaches the present day by breaking down classical mosque architectural perceptions with its transverse rectangular plan. There is a stone altar placed right in the middle of the Qibla wall. This altar, which is protruding outward, adds a distinct aesthetic look to the structure of the work.
Horhor Mosque's decorations made using natural paint (root paint) consist of very fine details. Using the geometric decoration (mukarnas), which is common in Islamic architecture, this work has architectural features of anatolian Seljuk period rather than classical Ottoman architecture.
Horhor Mosque, which combines Arab and Turkish architectural cultures, has been reopened to visitors with the latest restoration work. Today, the building, which is on the list of historical values inventory of the Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism, is the castle mosque of Van, so to speak.
