Vezalon (Yahya) Monastery
16.07.2024 15:11
Although it has never reached the fame of popular monasteries in Trabzon, it is estimated that the Vezalon Monastery, which has the honor of being one of the first monasteries of Anatolia, was built in 270 BC. Repair works are being carried out for this house of worship, which has not seen any restorations for centuries.
Vezalon Monastery, which is waiting for the day to be brought to tourism after the repair, has magnificent beauties in it, even though it has been abandoned for nearly 100 years. Although it appears to belong to the 17th and 18th centuries according to its appearance from the outside, the basis appears to date back to the 4th century when looking at the inscriptions and baptism records inside the monastery. Among the first monasteries in Christianity, the structure has a complex process. The monastery, which is thought to have reached its present size with new sections added later in a similar structure to Sumela Monastery, is located in Maçka district.
Located in the pine forests, there is a cave and spring of water next to the Vezalon Monastery. The church and monk's rooms in front of it, which remain in existence, belong to the 19th century. The chapel 9 kilometers north of the complex dates back to the 15th century and includes valuable frescoes.
