The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus in Bodrum, which is about 1 hour and 40 minutes drive from Muğla city center, is shown as one of the 7 Wonders of its period, based on the ‘Ancient World’.
The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, which is recorded to have been completed in the 4th century BC, is actually the first. It is a mausoleum built for the Persian Empire Satrapi Mausolos. At this point, it existed between 550 BC and 330 BC. It should be noted that the Persians divided their conquered territories into areas called ‘satraplik’, and that each had a ruler at its head. Mausolos was the head of the Persian Satrap of Caria, aka satrap.
After his death, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, built by his wife Artemisia, stands out with traces of Greek, pyramid roof and Egyptian architecture on its columns. It is also considered as the namesake ancestor of the mausoleum, which is today called the mausoleum.
The structure is known to have survived for over a thousand years with all its elements. It was destroyed in the 15th century as a result of a large earthquake which caused destruction in the region, and then the ruins of its stones were used by the Knights of Saint Jean who came to Bodrum in the construction of the castle. The area in Bodrum, where the Halicarnassus Mausoleum is now on display in the UK, has been placed under legal protection and can be seen in the form of an open-air museum with its various remains found in the places.
Finally, it is known that projects are being carried out to bring the Halicarnassus Mausoleum, which is surrounded by traces of time in the Tepecik neighborhood of Bodrum, to gain tourism more effectively with glass and aluminum construction.
