Mardin is an authentic cultural treasure located in the southeast of Turkey, at the center of many historical buildings dating back to the age of Artuklu, who ruled the city until the early 1400s. In this context, one of the prominent religious structures in the city is the Şehidiye Mosque, which gives its name to the neighborhood where it is located.
It is thought that the first version of the mosque at a functioning point was built in the first quarter of the 1200s. It is known that it was built by Artuklu Ruler Melik Nasreddin Artuk Aslan. It is also known that he was buried in the garden of the mosque after his death.
The decorations and spacious courtyard in the mosque, which has two prayer rooms on the south side, are one of the highlights. The first plan is being made again in 1917 after the collapse of the Şehidiye Mosque, which has undergone significant changes over the years. Meanwhile, the minaret rising next to the mosque today is added. Thus, the mosque, which completely differentiated its original state, is the most changed one among the many historical buildings around it.
In addition, Şehidiye, the name of the mosque, was deemed appropriate in accordance with the burials of Şehidiye, which were uncovered on its basis during the reconstruction at the beginning of the 20th century.
