Ruler Mahmut Mosque, which salutes Mardin in all its glory on the journey towards the savur gate, is perhaps the most beautiful of the architectural examples of the 14th century.
'City of History', 'Cradle of Civilizations', 'Eagle's Nest' or 'Stone City' and dating back to 4500 BC, Mardin is also seen as a complex of religions.
Ruler Mahmut Mosque has come to this day in an exemplary form. It is the only place left in all its glory from the Artukians who ruled in Mardin from the 11th century to the 14th century. The building was built by The Ruler of Artuklu, Ruler Salih, between 1312 and 1362. Because of the belief that Ruler Salih's tomb was found in the mosque with square planned and shrine, the building takes this name.
The simple cylindrical form minaret of Ruler Mahmut Mosque is one of the classic Artuk architectural examples. Hand-embroidered decorations at the entrance gate called portals are virtually intact. The entire structure, which says in inscription, it dates back to the 14th century, is stone.'
Ruler Mahmut Mosque, which has undergone small-scale restorations many times in accordance with its original, has been a mystical atmosphere in Mardin city and is one of the rare places with a different atmosphere.
