Located on a hill oversiding the village of Süngütaşı, about 30 minutes' drive from Sarikamis district of Kars, Surgütüs (Zivin Castle) is among the landmark locations of the region!
The construction date of the ruined castle, which dates back thousands of years, is not clear. On the other hand, it is understood that it was built at the time of the Urartu State, which was established before the time, especially based on some archaeological remains in the form of ceramic fragments. It is also known that it has been used for various periods since the 11th century during seljuk and Ottoman periods.
The fact that the Walls of Surgütüs (Zivin Castle), which they think may have been used for surveillance purposes due to its high location, are in poor condition, but are not completely destroyed, pointing to its robustness and the importance of the defensive structure. Today, there are hollow sections on the ruined castle walls. Also can be seen relatively short towers in the corners.
The Turkish flag is flying where are the partly wooded areas, a mosque and village houses in the lower parts of the castle. Even in the summer days in and around Sarikamis may be cold. That's why it's good to be cautious.
