Şadırvanaltı Mosque

The Şadırvanaltı Mosque, which is located in a historical district named after itself, is among the symbol places of Izmir. Evliya Celebi praises the mosque in Kemeraltı Bazaar. In the works of Evliya Çelebi, this mosque is in the form of the Bıyıklıoğlu mosque. The name of the mosque goes by its present name in records after the 17th century. It is determined that it was registered with the Kanuni Sultan Süleyman Foundation during the same period. The original inscription of the structure does not reach today. Only a repair inscription dated to the year 1230 (1815) is found. It is clear from the information in this inscription that the mosque suffered major fire disasters. In addition, the Şadırvanaltı Mosque underwent a major repair in 1883. Şadırvanaltı Mosque attracts attention with its decorations and architectural features. In the western and northern part of the mosque, there is a fountain. The fountain located in the western section is much larger. Just above,there is a large library. There is a seven-couplet inscription at the entrance of the library. The mosque does not have any courtyard. In the lower section, there is a small bazaar brought together from different shops. According to the information given by Evliya Çelebi, these are the herbalist shops of that period. There is a sentence gate on the façade facing the northern section of the mosque. This section is closed as shops were added in later years. The final communion place takes the form of L. This section also sits on cut stone sequins. The Harim(sanctuary) section is square-planned. Just in front of the mihrab, there is a large dome covering the passage with trumpets. The arches on both the east, north and west walls of the building are seated on recessed columns. Fluted pilasters between both floors add a distinct aesthetic to the structure. The Harim(sanctuary) is illuminated by four separate arched windows. On the walls of the Harim(sanctuary), there are very elegant fluffy plant figures, adorned with gold gilts.
