Atatürk Museum

Atatürk Museum is located just above Atatürk Street in Izmir 1.Kordon. The building was purchased in 1875 by Takfor, one of the famous carpet merchants of that time. The building, which was used as a home for a long time, was abandoned in 1922, amid the atmosphere of war. This historic building, which remains derelict at one time, is passed into the ownership of the Treasury. Later, the army entered Izmir and considered this house as a headquarters point. It is known that Atatürk carried out his special work here during the Izmir Economic Congress. A term is rented by the Treasury to Naim Bey. Mr. Naim considers the building as a hotel for a long time. Atatürk stayed here when he came to Izmir with Ismet Pasha in 1926. A few years later, the municipality buys this place and includes new items and gives it to Atatürk as a gesture. Therefore, between 1930 and 1934 Atatürk used this house every time he visited Izmir. After the death of Atatürk, the house is left to his sister Makbule Baysan. In 1940, the municipality projects this place as a museum. On September 11, 1941, the museum was inaugurated with a grand ceremony. Since then, it has been combined with the Atatürk Provincial Library. In 1972, the property rights of the house were transferred to the Archaeological Museum by the Prime Minister's Office. After the necessary restoration procedures have taken place, it is reopened as Atatürk and Ethnography Museum in 1978. As all ethnographic works in the museum were transferred to the Izmir Ethnographic Museum soon after, the name of the museum is updated as Atatürk Museum. The historical building draws attention from Ottoman architecture as well as Levantine architecture. Built in a generally neoclassical style, the structure consists of a basement, ground and a main floor. The front facade has a cute bay window. These bay windows are found in many of the historical houses in Izmir.
