Arkas Museum of Naval History, located in Bornova, Izmir, opened in May 2012. As the name of the museum suggests, Arkas has made a very serious contribution to the financial process of the museum. Ship maquettes, ship antiques, paintings and other collectible pieces on display at the museum were created over an average thirty-year period. Arkas Museum of Naval History has three floors in total. The museum contains 112 ship models and 127 pieces of ship antiquities. The main objective is to show the development experienced in the maritime sector over the years. The oldest of the pieces that make up the collection belongs to the year 1000 BC. The building that houses the museum is also the home where the Arkas family once lived. The house is estimated to have been built in the mid-1800s. A compass helm cabinet is located on the first floor of the museum, which is open to visitors who have special interest in such themes as maritime and sailing. At the same time, models of Columbian explorer ships, as well as domestic ships such as the Bandırma steamer and the yacht Savanarona, attract attention. On the other hand, apart from the models, many special works produced by important marine painters add a different atmosphere to the museum. A total of 67 tables are located within the center. Visits to the Arkas Museum of Naval History were set as one day per week in normal circumstances. After the intense interest of the visitors to the museum, the museum management decided to increase the visits to three days a week. It is currently possible to visit the museum on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The museum is located very close to Ege University, making young people always interested in it.
