Although he remained Sultan for only eight years, Yavuz Sultan Selim, who increased the borders by 2.5 times, not only added lands of Egypt to the territory of the Ottoman Empire but also brought the caliphate to the Empire, and he is also known for killing all his male relatives except his only son. Additionally, he took a separate place before both his predecessors and successors by using force without hesitation in the uprisings, and by showing a harsh attitude no matter who he does not like.
The Yavuz Sultan Selim Mosque, on an elevation near the Golden Horn in the Fatih district of Istanbul, has a serene atmosphere in contrast to the Sultan's fame. The mosque, which was intended to be built by Yavuz Sultan Selim, was completed by his son Kanuni Sultan Suleiman towards the end of the 1520s upon his sudden death. The 9th Ottoman Sultan, Yavuz Sultan Selim, closed his eyes to life in Edirne because of a furuncle on his back that could not be cured.
The mosque attracts attention with its courtyard decorated with Iznik tiles prepared with multicolored glaze technique, which has an octagonal domed fountain. Because this place is full of peace with its lush garden full of great trees and chirping birds. Elegant tiles are also found in the interior of the square planned mosque. In Yavuz Sultan Selim Mosque, where there are dense decorations in the imam's chair, cages and all other parts in general, the original woodwork can also be shown among the eye-catching details.
The historical mosque, which was opened for worship in 2010, is located near the Tomb of Yavuz Sultan Selim, built by his son Kanuni Sultan Süleyman, who completed the mosque in his father's name, is among the prominent spiritual and artistic attractions of the city.
