Tophan-i Amire building is located very close to Nusretiye mosque in Tophane district on the coast of the Marmara Sea in Istanbul. The historical building, which looks like a castle on the borders of the Beyoğlu district, was used as a cannon casting workshop during the reign of Ottoman Sultan Fatih Sultan Mehmet in the 15th century.
Two different churches were located at this location. Cannon production for the Navy and Army continued until the 19th century. In the early 1900s, it ceased to be a cannon casting workshop and began to be used for educational purposes.
The structure has maintained its military aspect, which has changed with the conditions over time, in line with educational purposes for many years... The structure, which was allocated to Mimar Sinan University for the training of students in 1992, continues to provide interesting visual experiences to its visitors, providing the function of a cultural and artistic center today. Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University Tophane-i Amire Culture and Art Center, where various exhibitions are held in three separate departments, has an important attraction point throughout the year. Besides entering the building and enjoying activities, it is also a pleasure to sit on the benches in the inner courtyard overlooking the sea.
