Taşkışla, a historical building located in Beyoğlu district on the European side of Istanbul, is one of the prominent Ottoman structures of the city. Taşkışla on the street of the same name was built between 1846 and 1852 in the Renaissance style as a military-based building in the Ottoman Empire. Immediately after its construction, it was used to treat French soldiers wounded during the Crimean War. In 1860, it became a military barracks.
The structure, which was first allocated to the Board of Education along with the Republic, was then transferred to Istanbul Technical University after having gone through extensive repair. Today, in addition to the Faculty of Architecture, the Institute of Social Sciences, the Department of Fine Arts, and the Continous Education Center are within this structure.
A magnificent building with a rectangular plan with three floors, one of which is a basement and two full floors, rises in a courtyard. The structure, which is notable for its outward projections at the corners, also stands out with its roof part. Columns emphasizing antiquity and wide corridors in the interior are among the interesting details of the building, all of which are separated by pilasters.
