Saint Esprit Catholic Church is located in the rear courtyard of Notre Dame de Sion High School, a French school located on Cumhuriyet Street in Elmadağ, Istanbul. The church was opened for worship in 1846.
This cathedral which is located directly opposite the TRT building is one of the most important places of worship for Catholics living in Istanbul. The rostrum of religious leaders of Catholics from the Latin tradition is located here. By this time, four popes had visited the church, whose history dates back more than a century.
Visitors to the church are greeted by a majestic statue rising right in the middle of its courtyard, visible from the front of the school. Pope XV. The designer of this statue which belongs to Benedictus was Ouattrini, and the pedestal was designed by Medici.
Another interesting feature of the cathedral is the underground cemetery below. In this part, where efforts to search for burial continued until 1927, many monumental tombs were found, including names such as Giuseppe Donizetti, one of the Palace musicians, and Monsignor Hillereau, the founder of the church. Saint-Esprit Catholic Church which was built in Baroque style is worth seeing with its eye-catching stained glass, paintings, and ceiling paintings decorated on wood.
