Located in the Marmara Sea, Heybeliada offers many interesting experiences on a modest area, from the naive pier and Aya Nikolaos Church, to the island streets and the Merit Halki Palace. The Greek Orthodox Theological School or Seminary to the north of the Değirmen Cape comes first among the structures that are identified with Heybeliada.
The Greek Orthodox Seminary, which is closed today, is on a high hill covered with forests on the island. Established on the basis of training Orthodox clergy, the school burned down many times, was demolished by earthquakes and witnessed wars over the years but each time it was rebuilt and in a sense revived.
The school today, which was rebuilt for one last time in the 19th century, is in the form of a three-story masonry building in a large garden. The entrance door with columns reminiscent of the ancient times is striking. At the same time, it attracts attention with its windows and ornaments bearing traces of Byzantine architecture.
Although the Greek Orthodox Seminary is closed, it is also known for its rich library with nearly 120 thousand works. Today, the structure that can be visited with a prior permission; occasionally hosts events such as exhibitions and conferences.
