Merkez Efendi’s Tomb

Merkez Efendi's Tomb is in Zeytinburnu, in the European Side of Istanbul. The tomb at Merkez Efendi Neighbourhood, which derived its name from the tomb, is one of the city's most visited spiritual destinations.
The tomb which was built in masonry system has a square plan with 7.50 metres length of each side. Its one side is covered with marble, and it is covered with a lead dome. The wooden symbolic coffin inside is with mother of pearl inlaid. Also, eight more people's coffins are in the tomb in addition to Merkez Efendi's. His grave can be visited from 9 am to 4 pm on specified days.
Merkez Efendi was born in Denizli and lived in 1463-1551. His real name was Müslihittin Ebu Taki bin Mustafa bin Kılıç.
He received medical education from the famous Islam scholars of the period in Bursa and Istanbul. He was assigned as the Sheik to the mission constructed in Manisa by the Sultan’s mother Hafsa the Queen Mother. Also a veteran, Merkez Efendi was one of the well-known scholars of the period in the areas of religion and Islamic mysticism.
He is famous for his position as Sheik, educating the young generation, and his medical knowledge as well as mesir paste, which healed Hafsa the Queen Mother. Merkez Efendi created this healing food named mesir paste, which is made from the mix of 41 spices and is still popular today.
