Tevfikiye Mosque is located in Arnavutköy district in the northern part of Beşiktaş district on the European side of Istanbul. Its name is sometimes confused with Teşvikiye Mosque in Şişli. It is also known as ‘Arnavutköy Mosque’.
It was built by Mahmud II, the 30th Ottoman Sultan who brought many architectural works to Istanbul, in the name of his son. It is recorded that it was opened for worship in 1838 as a result of six years of construction work. The sultan’s signatures are noticeable in the inscriptions in the mosque.
It has a large courtyard. The interior space with four doors is 287 square meters and stands out with its spaciousness. It has masonry walls, meaning that more resistant materials were used against possible fire and disasters. The mosque, which has a single minaret, has an elegant sultan’s gallery, the section between the courtyard called the last congregation place and the interior. The mosque, which has 29 windows inside, has very stylish ornaments and decorations throughout. Its finely crafted decorative ceiling is eye-catching.
Tevfikiye Mosque is one of the important Ottoman relics that adds great value to the silhouette of the coastal area of Arnavutköy, a dynamic destination where socio-economic life is experienced quite intensely.
