Museum studies in the field of the Air Force take us to the beginning of the 1900s. Airplanes belonging to various states, aircraft from the 1st World War, caused the Air Force Inspectorate to create a museum. The loot planes seized from the enemies after those times are collected in line with this goal. However, the War of Independence intervened in the process of creating a collection on behalf of the museum. The collected planes are taken to Maltepe so that they are not damaged. During this transportation, certain parts of the planes reserved for the museum are damaged. These damages and the plane crashes during the War of Independence delayed the ideas about establishing a museum for a while.

In 1960, work on the Aviation Museum is restarted. In this direction, an order was issued in 1963. Accordingly, it is requested to protect an aircraft in the units of the Air Force. As a result of this meticulous work carried out in the associations, the Organization of the Air Museum is established. 5 years later, the first aviation museum opens in İzmir Cumaovası. Although the opening was magnificent, the fact that the museum was so far from the city gave rise to the idea of ​​moving. Since it cannot reach the desired visitor level, the museum moves to Istanbul. The idea of ​​establishing a museum at the foot of the Military Airport in Istanbul's Yesilkoy district, close to the Air Force Academy, gets stronger.

The construction of the Istanbul Aviation Museum started in 1977. On October 16, 1985, the Aviation Museum opens on an area of ​​65 thousand square meters. Transportation can be provided by buses numbered BN1 and BN2 departing from Eminönü. The museum is closed to visitors on Mondays. You can visit the museum for a fee between 09.00 and 17.00 on weekdays. Museum card application is invalid at the Aviation Museum. However, free visits are provided for students. Ticket sales close at 16:00. School groups must make an appointment in advance to visit the museum.
