The Çengelköy Greek Orthodox Aya Yorgi Church, located at the intersection of Kuleli Street and Tanrıverdi Street in Çengelköy, Üsküdar, was built in the late 17th century to replace the existing church. There is also a fountain at the entrance of the church, dated 1908.
What has made this church most recognizable in recent times is that special day that is published in newspapers and news and is important for Christians. In January, when the birthday and baptism of Jesus are celebrated, a cross-raising ceremony is held right here at this church. In the ceremony, which is usually conducted by the Çengelköy Greek Orthodox Aya Yorgi Church and held in front of the Çengelköy Pier; visitors come to the pier with the procession. People who jump off the boat compete with each other to retrieve the cross thrown into the sea.
