The construction of the Grand Post Office building, which is the largest post office in Turkey and the first work of Architect Vedat Tek, began in 1905 and was completed in 1909. The historical building, whose first known name was the Post and Telegraph Ministry Building, was named the New Post Office in 1930 and later became known as the Grand Post Office.
The postal services, which were previously provided in the Post Office-i Amire Building in Eminönü and later in the courtyard of the New Mosque, were moved here after the construction of the building was completed. The entrance of the building, which is one of the first examples of the First National Architecture Movement, has the words "Posta Telegraph Ministry" written in old script with tile work.
The entrance of the building, which has witnessed history for 110 years with its magnificence and striking architectural structure and consists of 4 floors, is elevated with steps and the entrance is covered with a dome. It is said that the bricks on the facade, where hewn stone and marble are used, were specially designed by Vedat Tek. Inside the building, there is a rectangular central space rising for 3 floors and rooms surrounding it. The walls are dominated by 16th century Ottoman style tile work.
The post office building, which also served as the Istanbul Radio House in the past, currently serves as the Istanbul European Side PTT General Directorate and hosts a fully-equipped post office on the ground floor as well as a museum about our country's communication and telecommunication history.
