Bogazici University which is refferred to as BOUN based on its abbreviated name, is qualified as one of the most popular public universities. Boğaziçi University was first established under the name of "Robert College" on September 16, 1863 under the guidance of Christopher Robert and Cyrus Hamlin. It was transferred to the Republic of Turkey on September 10, 1971 after serving at the current South Campus for more than 100 years under the said name.
Boğaziçi University, which covers an exact area of 1 million 672 thousand 106 square meters, is an institution that has been mostly preferred by the students who get the highest scores in the Exam of The Council of Higher Education (YKS). The university, where the language of the education is English, was ranked first in the most preferred universities in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Aptullah Kuran was the first rector of the institution, which started to serve as an independent university under the name of Boğaziçi University on September 20, 1971. The main campus of Boğaziçi University, which has six campuses consisting of one on the Anatolian Side and the other five on the European Side, is the South Campus. There are also units such as Albert Long Hall, Anderson Hall, Mithat Alam Film Center and Van Millingen Library within the university, most of which consist of buildings built in the late 18th century. Boğaziçi University, of which the Uçaksavar Campus, Hisar Campus and North Campus are located in Bebek, houses Abdullah Kuran Library with a rich collection. Sarıtepe Campus in Kilyos also covers an area of 1 million 272 thousand 600 square meters.
