Aya Yorgi Patriarchate Church, of which Greek name is Kathedrikos Naos tou Agiou Georgiou, is located within the borders of Fener quarter of Fatih district in Istanbul. There is also Aya Haralambos Holy Spring, a library and Patriarchal building in the courtyard of the historical church affiliated to Fener Greek Patriarchate.
The most remarkable part of Aya Yorgi Patriarchate Church appearing behind the sea walls of the Golden Horn is the flamboyant patriarch throne from the 5th century. The church, which was damaged to a great extent as a result of the great fire in 1941, underwent a comprehensive restoration in 1989. The coffins of the three saints in Aya Yorgi Patriarchate Church, which was opened for worship again in 1991, are definitely worth seeing.
Aya Yorgi Patriarchate Church, where Sunday rituals are held between 09.15 - 12.20 on Sundays, is open to visitors between 08.30 - 16.00 every day. Another interesting part of the historical building, in which the mosaics dating back to the Byzantine period add a completely different atmosphere, is the column believed on which Prophet Jesus Christ had been whipped in Jerusalem. The person who ruled Aya Yorgi Patriarchate Church, which was used as a monastery in the 16th century and served under the Fener Greek Patriarchate accepted as the center of Orthodoxy, was Bartholomeos I, the Patriarch of Konsantinapolis Ecumenical.
Aya Yorgi Patriarchate Church, which is ruled by Patriarch of Konsantinapolis Ecumenical, Patriarch Bartholomeos accepted as the religious leader and representative of nearly 300 million Orthodox Christians in the world, is not very spectacular from outside, but its interior design is remarkable. The church with interesting three mosaic icons has managed to survive up to the present day due to the restorations it has undergone.
