Europe Passage located within the boundaries of Hüseyin Neighborhood of Beyoğlu, one of the most populous districts of Istanbul, has a perfect location at the intersection point of Meşrutiyet Caddesi formerly known as Hamalbaşı Street and Sahne Sokak also known as Tiyatro Street. Europe Passage connecting these two streets is visited by many local and foreign tourists every day due to its proximity to places such as Fish Market and Galatasaray High School.
The construction date of Avrupa Passage, which is also called "Mirrored Passage" due to the large number of mirrors in the passage, dates back to 1874. The European Passage, which was ordered by the Armenian Merchant Onnik Düz to Architect Pulgher to build, has been transformed into a much more modern form today although it was illuminated with gas lamps in the past.
The variety of products and services has been increased as of today by adding watch sellers, florists, fashion houses and piano producers to the passage where only hairdressers, shoemakers, grocery stores, tailors, soap makers, haberdashery and carpet shops were in service in the passage when it was first opened. Moreover, there are antique shops, carpet shops, postcards, porcelains and souvenir shops in Europe Passage, where many products are exhibited as "Istanbul Souvenir".
The passage is 56 meters long, has 22 shops and generally reflects the neoclassical style. The large sculptures on the upper facades of the European Passage, where Maltese stone known for its fire resistance is used in the construction, is definitely worth seeing. Europe Passage, where a part of the ceiling is covered with windows, is now illuminated by chandeliers hanging from the ceiling instead of gas lamps. Moreover, there are arches between all the shops, whose front faces are completely covered with glass.
