Gaziantep is home to a world-famous ancient settlement: the ancient city of Belkis-Zeugma. Founded in 300 B.C. on the banks of the Euphrates River, this striking city is one of the most important cultural values of the city today. In this context, the Zeugma Mosaic Museum, where the mosaics discovered in the ancient settlement are exhibited, stands out as a valuable place that breaks visitor records almost every day of the year.
Zeugma, whose population reached 80 thousand people at the time of the Roman Empire, was prominent as an important trade center and military base. It was about the same size as Athens, one of the largest cities of its era. The museum, where the mosaics of this densely populated city are displayed, promises its visitors a visual feast.
The museum, which houses the mosaics of Antope and Satyros, Akratos, Europa, Galateia, the young River God of the Euphrates and many more, is most famous for its Gypsy mosaics. The Mosaic, also known as the Gaia, was unearthed in 1992 and has since become a symbol of the museum.
