One of the famous Ottoman monuments in Gaziantep, a witness to thousands of years of history in southeastern Turkey, is the Shirvan Mosque. The historic mosque, located near the center of the city, has been contributing to Gaziantep's skyline for centuries.
Shirvan Mosque, also referred to as “Two Şerefeli(having two minaret balconies) Mosque’ by the residents of the region, was built by Shirvani Mehmet Efendi in the 17th century. Although the exact year of construction is unknown, it was determined that the place of worship dates back to before 1677 when historical sources were investigated.
Even after centuries, the standing structure differs slightly from its original form. For example, in terms of architecture, the wooden part and a room described as muezzin mahfil(gathering place) have not survived to the present day. On the other hand, the fact that the pulpit is skidded from the bottom and that it creates a part that can be entered and exited is one of its important values. Considering the pulpit, it is seen that the mosque is one of the rare examples.
Shirvan Mosque, whose roof is covered with tiles, is short, so the roof of the tiles can be seen in detail. Because this feature, it is one of the characteristic features of the structure. The place of worship, which has a single minaret and a small courtyard, is also quite simple and elegant with its historical fountain.
The Shirvan Mosque, which is open for worship today, awaits your visit in the ancient city of Gaziantep.
