Hasankale, which is on one side of the mountain and on one side dominates the plain where it is located to defend the city, is the most prominent among Erzurum's 14th century works.
Hasankale, built in 1339 by Hasan Bey, son of Ilhanlı Ameer Hacı Togay Bey, has a great strategic importance at the time of its construction. Part of the castle is lean on the mountain, and the other part is dominating the plain focused on developing the defence and strategy.
The southern walls are much higher than other walls due to terrain conditions, hasankale has a triangular plan to the north direction with its 125-meter-long and 20-meter-wide inner castle. The entrance door, which is in the western part of the inner castle, is a long rectangular. Erzurum Gate, Hidden Gate and Iron Gate, which constitute the steepest nose of the castle leading to Hasan Mountain, fascinate those who see it in its glory.
The most important element that makes Hasankale so famous and ensures that every tourist who comes to Erzurum never returns without seeing it is its secret passage. During the sieges, this secret passage way, where water is provided to the castle, extends from the inner castle to the Hasankale River.
