Sokullu Mehmet Paşa Bath

06.08.2024 13:43

Sokullu Mehmet Paşa Bath, one of the important buildings of Edirne, offers traces of the Turkish bath culture of the Ottoman period. As the name implies, the hammam was built by Sokullu Mehmet Paşa to Mimar Sinan. At the same time, the construction process is completed simultaneously with a large complex. Sokullu Mehmet Paşa Bath, whose construction was completed in 1570, is used for a very long period of diversion from its purpose. The municipality of Lüleburgaz recently carried out a special effort to bring this historic baths back to tourism and re-publicize the place and restored it with the logic of a city museum in Edirne. Sokullu Mehmet Pasha spent a long time in Edirne since his youth. A special bond develops between him and this city, especially because of the ‘Conscript Boys’ Barracks. As in the classical Turkish baths, the female and male sections are separated by sharp lines. It can therefore be considered as a double bath. The building of the domed space with the upper section takes about a year in total. As the hammam is located in Edirne city center, it does not pose a problem in terms of transportation. It is an advantage in terms of trip planning because it is placed being opposite to Three Minarets Balconies Mosque(Üç Şerefeli Camii). It is sometimes referred as “Üç Şerefeli Hamam” because of its mutual relationship with the mosque. The male and female entrances of the bath are in separate directions. The area where the men undressed is in the form of a monumental portico with its front facade open, covered and covered with columns. Is is also likened to Haseki Hürrem Sultan Bath. The original state of the bath is surrounded by rooms and shops located around it. Due to road works, certain parts of these shops and rooms were unfortunately demolished over time. The bathhouse, whose last serious repair took place in 1970, is open to visitors and is intact. It is even considered as one of the three baths available in the city.
