Patara Beach, one of Turkey's longest beaches, is located within Antalya’s Kaş district, showcasing the mesmerizing beauty of the Mediterranean. With a length of 12 kilometers and a width ranging from 280 to 1,500 meters, this beach offers visitors a vast stretch of sandy experience. Patara Beach is a natural and cultural heritage site, being a vital nesting ground for the famous Caretta Caretta turtles, and is recognized as a protected area.

Where is Patara Beach Located?

Patara Beach lies within the borders of Gelemiş Village in Kaş, Antalya, and Seydikemer in Muğla. The beach is 184 kilometers from Antalya city center, 73 kilometers from Fethiye, 43 kilometers from Kaş, and only 17 kilometers from Kalkan. The closest airports are Muğla Dalaman Airport and Antalya Airport. Transportation options include public transport from Kaş, Kalkan, or Fethiye, making it accessible to all visitors.

Why is Patara Beach Famous?

Patara Beach is well-known for its historical significance, as it lies adjacent to the ancient city of Patara, one of the six important cities of the Lycian Union. According to mythology, this ancient city was founded by Paturus, son of Apollo, and the nymph Lykia. The golden sands, Mediterranean waters, and its protected status as a nesting ground for Caretta Caretta sea turtles have made Patara a globally recognized and cherished beach. Its natural and historical appeal attracts both nature lovers and history enthusiasts.

What is the Sea Like at Patara?

The sea at Patara Beach is calm, shallow, and ideal for families with children, providing a safe swimming environment. The water is clear and can reach a depth of 200-300 meters in some areas, giving ample space for swimming and relaxation. During summer months, the sea temperature and wave conditions are usually ideal for beachgoers.

Entrance Fee for Patara Beach

Entry to Patara Beach is free for visitors who have a Museum Card. Non-card holders are required to pay a small entrance fee, which varies by season and current regulations. These fees contribute to the maintenance and protection of the beach.

Can You Camp at Patara Beach?

Due to its status as a protected area, camping on Patara Beach is prohibited. This restriction helps preserve the natural habitat, particularly as the beach is a crucial nesting site for Caretta Caretta turtles. However, there are campgrounds and accommodation options nearby in Gelemiş Village and the surrounding Patara area.

Are There Changing Facilities at Patara Beach?

Patara Beach provides various amenities to meet visitor needs, including changing cabins, showers, and restrooms. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available for rent, organized by the Gelemiş Village administration, enhancing the comfort and convenience for visitors.

Can You Bring Food to Patara Beach? Dining Options

Visitors are welcome to bring their own food and beverages to Patara Beach. In addition, a small cafeteria on-site offers snacks and refreshments, providing visitors with easy access to basic dining needs. The cafeteria is convenient for those who prefer light meals and drinks during their beach day.

Additional Features of Patara Beach

Patara Beach is notable not only for its historical and natural beauty but also for its unique golden sands and its impressive size, offering a perfect atmosphere for those seeking sun, sand, and sea. The beach is also famous for its appearance in classic Turkish cinema, with many iconic desert scenes filmed here. This unique blend of historical significance and natural splendor makes Patara Beach an unforgettable destination.

The easiest way to reach Patara Beach is by public transportation from Kaş, Kalkan, or Fethiye. Visitors traveling from Antalya city center can drive or use public transport, with the journey taking about 3 hours. There are parking facilities available near the beach for those arriving by car.
