Antiphellos

17.09.2024 17:07

Antiphellos is located within the borders of Kas, which is considered to be one of the most important districts of Antalya, and is also one of the names of Kas district in the Lycian period. Antiphellos is also seen in some sources in the form of Nisa or Meryemlik. Some inscriptions recovered in the KAS region reveal the fact that the city below the region was Antiphellos. In the 4th century BC, Antiphellos was known as a very small settlement. This place was used as the port of the area called Phellos at the time. The development of the ancient city of Antiphellos coincides with the Hellenistic period. Its original rise was during the Roman period. Antiphellos continued to develop, while Phellos went into decline. So now Antiphellos has moved from being the port of Phellos to becoming a richer city. Some remains of the city walls are seen in the part of the city facing Meis Island. Unfortunately, the northern or western parts of these walls have not survived to the present day. Only the remains in the part facing the sea can be examined. The left side of the city faces the Çukurbağ Peninsula. Set in Antiphellos, the theatre gives confidence with its extremely solid structure. The sarcophagus found in Uzun Bazaar Street also arouses interest. There is no information as to who exactly belongs to the sarcophagus, which has managed to reach it so far. The people therefore preferred to say 'King's Tomb'. The city of Antiphellos showed great development, especially thanks to its sponging activities. The area is very close to Meis Island, which is visited from time to time as part of the island tour. In the ancient city of Antiphellos, there are many rock tombs where the Gothic style was adopted. Lycian-style sarcophagi are among the rare artifacts that have survived to this day. There are no restrictions on days or hours. Therefore, domestic and foreign visitors can visit Antiphellos for free.
