Ulucanlar Prison Museum

It is an easy to reach, sophisticated museum located in Ulucanlar District in Altindag District of Ankara. As it is one of the first prisons in young Turkey after the Republic was established, Ulucanlar prison, which was converted from a military depot and started serving in 1925, remains open until July 2006, when it was transferred to Sincan prison. After the restoration project started in 2009, Ulucanlar Prison Museum is named and begins to welcome its visitors as of 2010. The thematic museum, which can be visited every day except Monday, is almost a different dimension of history. A number of famous names, journalists, writers, poets and politicians remain in the prison, which remained open for 81 years. The interesting theme of the museum is the various private items, personal information and photographs obtained mainly from the families of the convicted persons. Surrounded by biographical life stories, the museum deeply affects every one of its visitors without exception.
