Gordion Museum

In terms of the heritage left by Ankara, the museums in the city are considered very valuable. Gordion Museum, one of these museums, is located in Yassihöyük Village. The museum, which was established in the village of 500 people, was inaugurated in 1963. When you come to the museum, you may encounter a chronological display of the artifacts. These works successfully reflect the characteristics of each period. Three of the showcases feature ancient Bronze Age artifacts. In the same storefronts, artifacts from the period of King Midas' life are exhibited. In addition, it is possible to capture some traces of the early Phrygian period. Various textiles, iron tools or pottery used actively in each period add great color to the museum. In the exhibition hall, which was later included, a building dating from 700 BC is displayed in the panoramic display case. There is information that this building belongs to the destruction floor. In this section, called the ‘New Hall’, the Greek pottery from the 6th century BC and some everyday materials from the Roman Period find their place. In the final section of the museum, there is an opportunity to examine valuable coins and seal specimens recovered in the Gordion area. A tumulus belonging to Midas is found in Gordion in the Polatlı district of Ankara. Some bones of Midas are taken and transferred to the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations. There has been a significant increase in the number of people visiting Gordion Museum recently. After the final arrangements, an additional exhibition hall, a new laboratory and information hall further enhance the attraction of the museum. Especially the outdoor display areas offer a special and different experience for visitors. The last excavation site in the city of Gordion is afforested with various saplings, which the Phrygians preferred when making furniture. The counters are closed approximately one hour before the closing time of the museum.
