Trabzon Gulbahar Hatun Tomb

One of the surviving legacies of Trabzon's hosting to a large part of history is The Tomb of Gülbahar Hatun, one of the spiritual symbols of the city. The mother of Yavuz Sultan Selim, Ottoman sultan, the tomb of Gülbahar Hatun, who was born in Trabzon, is located in Ortahisar district.
It is known that the spiritually prominent tomb was built in a complex in the 16th century after the death of Gülbahar Hatun. The Complex can be summerized as; a Mosque, a bath, a madrasa, such as a whole of structures with different sections. In this context, other parts of the complex in question except the mosque have been perished, but the tomb, which has undergone various repairs over centuries, has reached the present day in very good condition. It’s also known as the Tomb of Hatuniye.
The dome, covered with an architectural technique called pandantif on the octagonal planned tomb, which also has inscription written in Persian and indicates to the date it was built. In the interior of the mausoleum made with cut stones, panels reminiscent of the Seljuk period, herbal and geometric decorations stand out. The structure is illuminated by seven windows.
The tomb of Gülbahar Hatun, the mother of Yavuz Sultan Selim, who died in Trabzon and gave the city an important complex and was names as one of the most successful sultans of the Ottoman Empire, can be visited, also attracts with it’s decorations. There is also a small garden on the front.
