Girls' Monastery

Girls' Monastery is among the highlights in Trabzon, which welcomes its visitors with its rich atmosphere of history on every corner. After many years, the building was restored and brought to tourism, and is located on the borders of Boztepe District, which also draws attention to the panoramic view of it’s balcony that offers bird's eye view in Ortahisar District in the south of the city.
According to written sources, the Girls' Monastery, built in the 14th century, is also known as Theotokos Theoskepastos Monastery and Panaghia Theotocos Monastery.
Built in a dominating cliff, the monastery was built in a method called masonry construction. Cut stones were mainly used in the construction. The Girls' Monastery, which does not contain much aesthetic detail in its exterior, gives a feeling of a basic rectangular building . On the other hand, it contains different elements in the interior. These include chambers identified as monk cells, two courtyards, churches, gathering places, library, dining room and bell tower. There is also a chapel at the end of one of the courtyards thought to be a small place of worship.
In the Girls’ Monastery entered through the iron gate between the small columns, the Byzantine Emperor of the period, was the portraits of Byzantine emperor of the period 3. Alexios' wife and mother, frescoes stand out. There are also new frescoes unearthed during restoration work. Therefore, it can be noted that this process is completed with important results for tourism. The roof of the building has not reached the present day, but has generally become an important attraction, the Girls' Monastery is among the striking historical values of Trabzon.
