Gülbahar Hatun Mosque

Gülbahar Hatun Mosque, one of the surviving heritage of Trabzon's hosting to a wide part of history, is one of the spiritual symbols of the city. Built by Gulbahar Hatun, the mother of Ottoman Sultan Yavuz Sultan Selim, who was born in Trabzon, the mosque is located in Ortahisar district. There is no inscription pointing to the construction date of the mosque, which stands out in terms of spirituality and is located in a social complex. On the other hand, it is thought that it was completed at the beginning of the 16th century, based on the inscription of the nearby tomb. In the meantime, it can be summarized as a complex of buildings with different parts such as the kulliye, mosque, bathhouse, and madrasa. In this context, the other parts of the complex, except the mosque and the tomb, have disappeared. The mosque, which resembles a triangle and has a plan defined as a dervish, has a main prayer space of 12 x 12 meters, five domes and a final congregation place between the courtyard. It has only one minaret. Rumi ornaments and the crown door with artistic features stand out in the mosque. The tomb next to Gülbahar Hatun Mosque, which has undergone extensive restoration in the 1970s, is also among the heavily visited locations. It is also known as Hatuniye Tomb. The dome of the octagonal planned tomb, which is written in Persian and has an inscription indicating the date of construction, is covered with an architectural technique called pendentive. In the interior of the tomb built with cut stones, panels reminiscent of the Seljuk period, floral and geometric ornaments are at the forefront. The building is illuminated by 7 windows. In the tomb, which attracts attention with its decorations, you can visit the tomb of Gülbahar Hatun, the mother of Yavuz Sultan Selim, who passed away in Trabzon and brought an important social complex to the city and is shown among the most successful Sultans of the Ottoman Empire. There is also a small garden in the front.
