Inner Castle

Kars Inner Castle, made of tuff stone from the region in the 4th century BC, sheds light on the lives of mankind in the past centuries. Located in the southwest direction of the Ancient City of Ani, Kars Inner Castle is built by Karsaklılar, who existed in the 4th century BC. Built on a small hill and surrounded by walls, the castle also includes a church. The entire inner castle, which is built as a defensive castle due to its strategically important location, is made of local tuff stone. The work, one of the oldest of Kars, is a pioneer of existing structures in the Ancient City of Ani, architecturally. Kars has become one of the most developed cities in terms of trade and art in the past centuries due to its passage through the Silk Road and its proximity to Mesopotamia. The Inner Castle also gives important information about the past defensive strategies of such an advanced city.
