Molla Zeyrek Mosque

After the conquest of the capital of the Byzantine Empire in 1453, extensive migrations took place from the lands of the Ottoman Empire in Anatolia and Rumeli to Istanbul. The Muslim population living in the city was increasing, and therefore architectural and characteristic changes were made based on converting churches into mosques. Within this context, the first structure mentioned in the records that it was converted from a church to a mosque in Istanbul is the Molla Zeyrek Mosque within the borders of today's Fatih district. The building, which has a history of more than 900 years, was known as Pantokrator Monastery in Byzantine times, and now it is shown as one of the most important values reflecting the ancient history of the city.
After an intensive restoration process completed in 2018, the building rises in a large area. It attracts attention with its patterned bricks. Unlike many similar structures, it is not single or bidirectional, you can circumambulate.
Built at a time when the city's population was about 400 thousand, the work also stands out for its artistic features. Its stunning mosaics, depictions and decorations that deserve to look closely are world famous.
