The Aga mosque is one of the most prominent Ottoman Empire-era monuments in Gaziantep, one of the most important cities in southeastern Turkey. The mosque, located on the Unnamed Martyrs Street in the district of Şahinbey, has been standing for centuries as an element that defines the historical identity of the street.
Agha Mosque, while Antep was not yet given ’gazi' title, was built by Ferruh Agha, who served as the prefect here hundreds of years ago. The construction of the mosque, which was started in 1554, ends in 1559, and it is clear as day that it was created with five years of feverish work. According to the inscription, the mosque is in its original state exactly 250 years after it was built and goes through a comprehensive restoration process.
The mosque, which has a rectangular plan, consists of a plan with two longitudinal nave. These sections, which have six sections and are covered by cross vaults with gable, are described as quite remarkable. While the dome in front of the mihrab impresses its visitors with its beauty, the fact that it is plain and far from ostentatious in general blends it with the splendor of simplicity.
There is a fountain right next to the entrance door in the small courtyard of the Agha Mosque, which has a single minaret balcony and a very short minaret. The mosque with its inviting atmosphere and the wisdom of the centuries that gives the impression of a hospitable Anatolian person is one of the most important and oldest architectural structures in Gaziantep,.
