Beylerbeyi mosque is originally designed as a small complex consisting of a bath, a madrasa and a mausoleum. The mosque located between Edirne city center and Sarayiçi is built on a small slope. There are no inscriptions belonging to the mosque. The date and founder of the mosque are determined from the records of the foundation.Sinaneddin Yusuf Pasha built the mosque in 1428.Yet there is literally no consensus on this topic. Some sources suggest that the founder was Abdullah Bey and the person who repaired was Sinaneddin Yusuf Pasha.
Evliya Çelebi, although he gives many information about Edirne city, does not give detailed descriptions of Beylerbeyi mosque.Evliya Çelebi writes that only this place is very spacious and beautiful. Some natural disasters that have befallen the city over time, like many artifacts, damage the Beylerbeyi mosque. In addition, Balkan War is effective in this type of damage. A very important part of the mosque collapsed in 1950. The parish area and the mihrab part are completely demolished.
In the 1950s, the walls of the domes in the mausoleum section of the complex were cracked and almost ruined. The madrasa section would be destroyed much earlier.According to ancient sources of Turkish artifacts, this mosque is a valuable building in the fifth degree. Despite this, the necessary moves to bring the mosque into tourism are not made for a long time.By the 1960s, the foundations administration carried out the necessary repair work and eventually the mosque was re-opened for worship.
Beylerbeyi mosque is evaluated in the category of zawiyah mosques. This style has a special place in Turkish art during the Ottoman period. Each side of the mosque has rooms (tabhane) in the shape of a bar with a dome. The mosque is made of both Stone and brick, and the mixed technique is adopted.
