Ayşekadın is one of the most popular districts of Edirne. This place is named after Ayşe Hatun, the daughter of Çelebi Mehmet. Ayşekadın Mosque, located on the old Istanbul road, is always the center of attention for local and foreign tourists.
Ayşekadın Mosque, which was built in 1468 with the contributions of Ayşe Hatun, has survived to the present day.Ayşe Hatun dedicates many shops and hammam in that process. There are Arabic figures in the inscription just above the door.Information about the construction history of the mosque is written here. The ablution taps on the side of the mosque were placed by a philanthropist named Haji Musli at the time. These taps are installed approximately 80 years after the opening of the mosque (1647).
According to the information quoted by Badi Efendi, after the great earthquake in July 1752, many monuments were seriously damaged. Ayşekadın mosque is also one of them.Especially the dome and the minaret are demolished part by part.In the years that followed, the minaret was once again damaged by lightning.
Ayşekadın mosque consists of cut stones and there is an extremely fine craftsmanship in its construction. By adhering to the square plan, the mosque has only a single dome. The Harim part(sanctum sanctorum) is covered with a wooden roof. This roof is seen to be inclined towards the front. On the contrary to tradition, the entrance of the Harim is on the side part.In the dome where the Harim is covered, sliced squinch draw attention. The octagonal pulley presents an image contrary to classical architecture.A common conclusion is that this also damages the external appearance. The most important repair in the mosque takes place after 1752.
