Çanakkale's Biga district was annexed to the Ottoman Empire by Lala Şahin Pasha, one of the commanders of Murat I, in 1364 and took the name of today's Biga. After this date, many mosques, madrasahs and fountains were built in the district by Gazi Umur Bey, the son of Timurtaş Pasha. This has made Biga a flourishing city.
The Çarşı Mosque Sheriff, which has a capacity of approximately 500 people, was built of yellow stone. The mosque, which has a very impressive architecture, suffered a great fire and therefore underwent a major repair. Repairs were completed in 1911. In the same year, Tahsin Kalfa of Gallipoli had a 12-domed fountain built directly opposite the Çarşı Mosque. This fountain, which was inspired by Ottoman and Seljuk architecture, provides an integrity with the Çaarşı Mosque Şerif.
